Βι¶ΉΣ³» (NYSE:HRL) today announced the donation of more than 5,000 pounds of protein products to benefit the Salvation Army Austin Corps. This contribution is part of Βι¶ΉΣ³»’ ongoing commitment to help feed America’s families.
The donation includes Hormel Compleats microwavable meals and Hormel Natural Choice deli sandwich meats, and will provide more than 26,000 meals for people in need. Βι¶ΉΣ³» selected these products because they provide a much-needed supply of protein.
“We sincerely hope that this donation will help the Salvation Army assist those in need,” said Jeffrey M. Ettinger, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Βι¶ΉΣ³». “This donation confirms our commitment to address hunger in America one community at a time.”
According to results in The 2008 Hormel Hunger Survey, one in seven Americans (14 percent) said they personally or someone in their immediate family have received food from a food bank, shelter or other charitable organization in the past year because of lack of money for food. The results, collected in August 2008, also reported that 22 percent of Americans who donated products the previous year to charitable organizations donated less in the past year because of higher food prices and less disposable income.
In fiscal year 2008, Βι¶ΉΣ³» provided more than $1.2 million in product donations and program support for the effort to end hunger nationally.
